Last Week's Tech, Today

In this blog series, Skookum’s Director of Development, Mark Flowers, shares a sampling of news stories that caught our attention last week. Check back every Monday for a quick rundown, in case you missed it.

Instapainting

Ever want to commission an oil painting of your favorite football player? Now you can. Just send Instapainting a photo and a master artist will complete a freehand portrait starting at just $99 (or $49 if you'd like mixed media). Custom artwork at this price point sounds near impossible. But the mass production of oil paintings is actually an established industry in Dafen, a small village in China abounding with artists. It's here that Instapainting is connecting its buyers to professional painters.

Dog Face

Trix

Basecamp 3 is out and with it comes a bunch of new and exciting features and technology. One of the more interesting pieces of code is Trix, their new browser-based text editor. It takes a different approach by using contenteditable as an I/O device and handling the changes directly rather than using execCommand. It's a really cool concept made better by the fact that it's open source, so everyone can use it and contribute to it.

Charlotte Creative Mornings

Tina Roth Eisenberg (@swissmiss) started Creative Mornings in 2008 in New York City, a monthly breakfast lecture series to inspire and connect local creatives. Since then, it has expanded to 130 cities around the globe, and Charlotte is the newest city to join the list. The first meeting kicks off this Friday, 11/6, and it's going to be awesome. Participation is free and open to anyone interested in attending, just make sure to sign up ahead of time.
