The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is one of America’s leading urban public libraries. Since opening their doors over 100 years ago, the Library has grown to serve more than one million residents in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
The Library provides the Mecklenburg community with a wealth of information and services. With the growth of technology and smartphone usage, the Library’s team noticed an increasing demand for digital resources. They saw a unique opportunity to provide greater access to information and improve the experience for their visitors.
Through close collaboration over a fast-moving four-month project, the Library and Skookum designed and developed a feature-rich iOS mobile app “pilot” that made classic and digital library resources available through the app. The app includes a virtual library card and uses iBeacon indoor proximity technology that notifies visitors to learn more about Library services and resources as they walk around the facility.
Library visitors now have the convenience of a digital library card so they never have to worry about remembering to bring it, along with seamless mobile access to the Library’s catalog of books, ebooks, audiobooks and more. App users can search the catalog and manage their account from their mobile device, including placing and canceling holds and viewing checked-out materials. In addition to making day-to-day tasks easier, the app also provides visitors with helpful notifications about programs, events, and services they may be interested in to enhance their experience.
David Singleton, Director of Libraries
"With better technology integration, we’re offering customers the ease and flexibility we know they seek, also they can be free to learn and explore, no matter how they’re interacting with their library."
