Skookum Digital Works in Charlotte, North Carolina has an immediate need for a badass digital designer.

We are a rapidly growing and innovative software studio serving mostly startups from around the country as well as established business and some agency/advertising/marketing clients.

Skookum Digital Works practices, and likes to push, the idea that what we all do is not about the internet—we’re in digital manufacturing. Increasingly, everything we touch, use, and play with in our daily lives is a tactile experience—even if it is delivered on a screen.

The digital design lead position will be responsible for leading all types of design projects from complicated software (in the browser) user interfaces, smart phone experiences, tablet experiences, data visualizing displays, customer facing work, administrative panels, and cool marketing materials (and basically, if you can think it, we can make it on a screen—sky’s the limit.)

In short, we want everything we make to look as beautiful as the best app on your phone or iPad.

You do not have to have programming skills, but you must understand how programming works

Skills

- uncanny sense of space and typography
- deep passion for intuitive user interface
- understanding of reflexive/responsive/adaptive design
- knowledge of CSS3/HTML5 tips/tricks/options as they relate to design & layout
- mastery of Photoshop and Illustrator (i.e. can do layout AND icons)
- you know enough about print to bang out some cool t-shirts here and there

Qualifications

- sick nasty portfolio (don’t care about brands, just your beautiful work)
- desire to work with developers on the bleeding edge of possible
- web, mobile, tablet and software-style portfolio projects are a must

Roles

- listen to project needs, translate text ideas and rambling whiteboards into beautiful layouts and UI
- lead clients through brainstorming sessions
- communication with project managers and developers about ideas/needs/wants
- serve marketing needs through continuous website improvements
- quickly comp ideas to put in front of clients or share with developers

Most of the guys here have relocated from somewhere else. Charlotte is cosmopolitan enough to do large city things (2MM+ people metro), but is actually an affordable place to raise a family. It’s big enough to get lost in but small enough that you can make a difference (at our company, in the local creative scene, etc.) The weather here is fantastic.
